About Role

Pain management nurses are responsible for the care of patients with chronic or acute pain. Once they have assessed a patient’s pain, they work closely with doctors and other nurses to create a treatment plan. Pain management nurses administer medications and provide pain relief through other therapeutic methods.

Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competent pain management skills and communicates to the multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrates critical thinking / problem solving skills ensuring effective functioning and performance of the job
  • Assesses the educational needs of staff related to pain management, assists with pain assessments and assists in providing educational programs for staff in coordination with the Unit Nurse Manager/designee
  • Teaches, supports, coaches and mentors nursing staff to promote evidence-based practice, knowledge, skills and professional development related to pain management.
  • Liaises with hospital departments in monitoring standards of care relating to pain management
  • Reviews appropriate policies, procedures and updates according to evidence based, best practices
  • Assesses, plans, designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs and materials for patients and families in relation to pain management
  • Reviews patients on intravenous (PCA) and epidural pain management in a timely manner and evaluates effectiveness of therapy
  • Monitors patient satisfaction in relation to pain control and its management
  • Acts as a patient/staff advocate through the promotion and maintenance of ethical standards in pain management
  • Demonstrates skills in continual assessment of patient and family’s physical and psychological needs
  • Coordinates a multidisciplinary approach for effective and efficient pain management service.
  • Participates in unit/departmental meetings and committees/projects as required
  • Demonstrates cooperation, coordination and respect among individuals / departments in order to provide excellent customer service (internal and external).
  • Liaises with and updates the Physicians and multidisciplinary team for any significant changes in the plan of management of pain.
  • Takes part in the nursing orientation to present the pain management services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to render care and services based on needs, age appropriateness and developmental stage of patients.
  • Conducts daily unit rounds for a proactive planning of care of the patients in need.
  • Provides input in the selection of Quality Measures related to pain management and collects and analyses data accordingly.
  • Reviews and monitors incidents relating to pain management and takes appropriate actions in discussion with the relevant Unit Managers
  • Performs all duties and tasks as per the hospital Code of Conduct and in line with the hospital Vision and Mission.
  • Accepts additional duties, within the scope of practice in periods of higher workload, and needs and as assigned by the CNO
  • Promote and contribute to the overall Culture of Safety.
  • Maintains open communication with all staff throughout the hospital, regulatory agencies and community.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of Prevention and Control of Infection (PCI), International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs), Care of Patient (COP) in Inpatient settings & Patient & Family Education (PFE).

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years)
  • Post Graduate Degree in Advanced Clinical Speciality (Pain Management) is a must
  • Current license to practice nursing in country of origin and with the DHA
  • BLS/ACLS Certifications
  • Minimum five (5) years nursing experience in acute hospital setting
  • At least 2 years of experience in pain management
  • Recent experience in a JCI accredited hospital setting – desirabl
  • Private hospital experience preferred
